50 SHADES OF GREEN - Chiang Mai & The Rice Fields

50 SHADES OF GREEN

The rolling green hills of Thailand are a true delight to experience. Also known as "The Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields", Chiang Mai and the northern region are the places where to see some of the most beautiful rice fields in the country.

The great thing about rice fields is that they changes colour according to the season. So if you come back to the same place at another time of the year, it will look completely different.

To discover some of the most amazing rice terraces and fields in Chiang Mai, read our story. But first of all, let's check out the different stages involved in rice farming.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE RICE TERRACES IN CHIANG MAI?

Rice terraces and rice fields are spectacular throughout the year, with different colours indicating each stage of growth.

  • From May to June: The beginning of the rainy season is the time when farmers start planting rice. During this time, you will see the rice terraces filled with water, dotted with young rice plants.
  • From July onward: It's the rainy season, the rice will slowly grow and become greener until an intense green hue radiates from the rice terraces. Many people find them at their most striking during this time.
  • Towards October: The rice will start to mature and the fields will slowly turn from green to golden yellow. This is probably the best season to plan your visit as the chances of rain are considerably lower. Usually, the rice harvest takes place in November and December.
