Huay Tung Tao is Chiang Mai’s nearest equivalent to a beach resort. This huge man made lake with a picturesque mountain backdrop is the perfect place to run, go for a walk in the cool morning, have a picnic with friends in the afternoon, or a watch the sunset in a quiet and relaxing surrounding.
Huay Tung Tao is actually a reservoir, built by the will of King Rama IX, in order to solve water scarcity problem among nearby area. The surrounding area gives you the feeling of “gotten away” while being only 20 minutes from the moat. Located just a few kilometers North-West of the city’s center it is surrounded by nature and offers bamboo huts at the water’s edge from where you can relax and admire the view. These huts are owned by restaurants supplying delicious Thai cuisine at local prices.
Huay Tung Tao lake is also a wonderful place to go in the morning for avid birdwatchers. You can view there some exceptional and beautiful migratory birds difficult to find elsewhere. It is also a gorgeous and calming place where you can sit back and relax in a floating bamboo raft.
If you are more of an adventurer, there are plenty of activities to do there such as: swimming, hiking, biking, jogging, paddle boating, get a massage and even meditating.
The way to go to Huay Tung Tao Lake is easy to remember: head towards Mae Rim along canal road, passing the 700 Years Sport Stadium. Continue for about 700 meters and turn left at the sign (there is a big temple on the side of the road). Then follow the road to the lake. Entrance Fee is 50THB / person.
