Healthy eating is essential for children's growth, development, and overall well-being. However, in remote rural areas of Thailand, the food served at schools does not meet 40% of the daily Thai DRI nutritional recommendations. This is due to low funds and a lack of knowledge.
Since 2014, FOOD FOR GOOD has been working to bring balanced and nutritious lunches to schools in Northern Thailand’s remote areas. The organization follows the four goods: good food, good knowledge, good farm, and good health. They conduct nutrition workshops for school teachers and introduce self-sufficient ways to gather quality ingredients.
FOOD FOR GOOD believes that schools are the ideal setting to improve not only education, but also student health outcomes. In Thailand's remote areas, teachers play multiple roles, including educating and guiding the youth, overseeing the school kitchen, developing community activities, and being involved in community leadership. As they have gained the confidence of the community, they play a major role in passing down nutrition knowledge to the children, their parents, and the rest of the village.
With their diverse set of skills and expertise, FOOD FOR GOOD's staff and volunteers ensure that the programs are carried out with great dedication and bring positive impacts to the families. The organization's chefs and nutritionists introduce self-sufficient ways to prepare nutritious meals, as well as hands-on practical gardening, cooking, and hygiene programs.
This great project is delivering evidence-based healthy eating programs and giving local schools and communities the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make positive lifestyle choices and changes.
Delivered in consultation with the community, FOOD FOR GOOD's programs have enabled the establishment and maintenance of community edible gardens, which are used to prepare children's meals. They have also prepared 4,523,596 meals for the children, organized nutritional programs through 125 schools in remote Northern Thailand, trained 368 teachers, and installed 15 clean drinking water systems. All this for a better future and success in life for more than 20,000 children.
