Siam Celadon in Chiang Mai has unveiled a stunning new mural that pays homage to the rich heritage of celadon pottery. The project, initiated by the owners Mrs. Daeng and Mr. Nit, brought together two esteemed instructors from Chiang Mai Rajabhat University—Mrs. Siriporn Khuenmamuang and Mr. Somsak Phromchak—along with eight top students from the Art Education Program. Over a period of six weekends, the dedicated team collaborated to create this vibrant piece of cultural art.
The mural, nearly 10 meters long, depicts the traditional process of making celadon pottery in ancient times—a method still preserved and practiced at Siam Celadon today. Central to the artwork is the iconic “dragon kiln,” named for its long, curved structure, which is also present on the grounds of Siam Celadon in full-scale form.
The painting captures many cultural details, including the traditional attire of Northern Thailand, classic blue and green celadon wares, and traditional water jars. Its composition was inspired by a historical mural from the Sukhothai Museum but reimagined in the unique artistic style of Siam Celadon.
This collaboration between Siam Celadon and Rajabhat University highlights the remarkable skill of both teachers and students, while reinforcing Siam Celadon’s ongoing commitment to preserving Thailand’s ceramic heritage. Through both the mural and the construction of traditional kilns last year, Siam Celadon continues to serve as a living museum of Thai craftsmanship for future generations.
