Awk Phansa (End of Buddhist Lent)

Awk Phansa marks the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent period and the traditional end of the rainy season. The final day of the Buddhist Lent period falls on the full-moon day of the eleventh lunar moon and is known as Awk Phansa.
According to Buddhist belief, the day commemorates when Buddha descended back to earth after spending three months in heaven where he had visited his mother. His return was greeted by his followers with gifts of food and today Thai Buddhists mark the event by visiting temples and making merit.
Naga Fireball Phenomenon

In Nong Khai, near the border of Laos, on the nights, before and after the fast, you can see in the sky along the river reddish fire balls rising from the ground up to several hundred meters.
Some people say that the Lao soldiers shoot those balls, while other think that the fire balls are shot come from the mouths of snakes that live in the river. It is a beautiful event that attracts hundreds of locals and visitors.

If you want to experience a mega-party you should definitely come during the high season, between late December and April. Another peak is during the summer holidays in July and August. October -mid-November are the quietest months on Koh Phangan.
